Who is Free Palestine?

Free Palestine is a collective of students who are fighting for change. RMIT has ties to weapons companies such as BAE Systems, our education is getting more expensive and far-right bigotry is getting worse.

We are students who are fighting for a Free Palestine and to end the connections RMIT has to the barbarity in Gaza.

The student union has a multi-million dollar budget and the ability to run campaigns that mobilise students to fight against these weapons ties, but it has been completely missing in action. Take a scroll though RUSU’s instagram page and you won’t find a single post about Palestine this year. This isn’t good enough.

Activists in Free Palestine have been organising student strikes for Palestine, the Weapons Companies Off Campus campaign, the 2024 Gaza Solidarity Encampment and the Student General Meeting for Palestine. Now we want to get these activists into the student union so we can run university-wide campaigns. Standing up for Palestine is the moral question of our time.

Free Palestine also recognises that the fight for Palestine is connected to every other issue that impacts students. 

We think that our education should not be for profit. At the moment the RMIT Vice Chancellor has a salary of $1mil while he cuts our education and access to services like the Adobe suite. The salaries of the top executives should be cut and put into staff and student services - our education should not be sacrificed for profits.

The fight for Palestine is the fight against oppression and injustice. Activists in Free Palestine have been part of movements against the Nazi boxing gym in Sunshine, and against the notorious transphobe Posie Parker.

How can students study when the cost of living is so high that we can only squeeze in going to classes around work, and when Youth Allowance and Austudy are so low? Free Palestine activists will link up with other student unions to bring the fight for cheap student accommodation and better welfare to a national level.
